Meet Gloria ♥

At long last we have collected 'Gloria' our new mobile home.  Over the past three days we have driven 1350 miles from Bath, England to Naples (home!).  It has been a long drive!  We drove to Calais and used the Channel Tunnel which so far I have always found to be really quick and easy.  Through France we drove via Reims and Nancy before stopping for the night near Colmar.  If only the rain had stopped it would have been a nice place high up in the hills with a very alpine feel.

The next day was a real slog with 9 hours driving but we did it in remarkably good spirits.  In order to crack on we woke the girls at 5 and buckled them in with pillows and quilts where they went back to sleep.  We were a good three hours into the journey before they woke for breakfast :)  I really enjoyed the drive through Switzerland, even with the wiggly mountain roads.   The views were amazing It will be so good to spend some time travelling around the area.  We did have time to stop for chocolate of course.

At the end of the day we stopped near Florence (my favourite place in Italy).  There was no time to explore after all this was just a transport trip really...there will be plenty of time for exploration in the future.

At last day three brought us home.  It was a little bit exciting getting into our drive at home...literally reversing inch by inch to avoid the walls on three sides!!! We did it though and Gloria is sitting very happily on the drive ready for the long drive when we move back to the UK in July.  That trip will be a far more leisurely.

Planning routes for the future ♥

Long time no see!!

Well work really gets in the way of blogging is all I can say - but yippee I am back.  I am determined to post at least twice a week...mind you the road to hell and all that!!

The sun is shining here and you can really feel the temperature hotting up.  We eat outside most days which I love.  Even in England we try to eat outside as much as possible.  There is something very restful about sitting listening to the world...it slows me down to an almost stop - very Italian of me.

There is something I have notice about Italians that I love (excuse the generalisation) they seem content to 'do enough'.  Nothing seems as important as having time to eat, enjoy the sun and talk.  Wow they love to chat - standing in the sea on a hot day, at the cafe for breakfast, over food in the evening or over a slow lunch.  Everything else is completed until it is 'good enough'.  I think that this is a lovely ethos.  What is the point of working 24/7 - where is the life in that?  What is the point in a bigger house, bigger car etc if all you do is work.  If I take anything from Italy it will be the importance of doing enough - and then enjoying my family, friends and the world around me!

Ah preach over!  So on to shopping - anyone else spot the inconsistency?  Actually the supermarket here often has a 1E sale when whole areas are brimming with everything for 1E - a bit like the pound shop in the UK.  Well I picked up these little glasses and am very pleased with myself.  Just the thing for the garden table.

Lucky Sunday?

How come Little L needs waking every school morning at 7 but on Sundays seems to wake at 6 full of bounce and ready to get up?? One of life's little mysteries.  It is 9:30 here and already we have been for a walk around the orchard with the dog - hunted for four leaf clovers - and found it...

Yesterday Little L and I went to a car boot sale.  We made coconut ice to sell as well as taking all our unwanted things.  I LOVE coconut ice, the colour, the taste, the texture all makes me think of fair grounds and fun.  Up until now I have never been very successful at making it but having found a recipe in my mums old recipe book I understood the stress on melting the sugar slowly and then bringing it to the boil rapidly after that.  It may sound simple but makes the difference between coconut ice that sets and one that doesn't.  I have put my mums recipe up on my PAGES if you want to have a go - it is very sweet but very yummy.

We made a massive 30 euros profit at the car boot but we were not really in it for the money (which is clearly a good thing).  Little L had 3 euro to spend and really enjoyed the freedom to search though all the boxes of bits.  She managed to get quite a lot for 3 euro and even brought me a lovely tea pot (not everyone's cup of tea....excuse pun...but brought with love) and of course I have already made a cup of tea in it.

Sunday...

Time has flown by this week with my Big G home from school in England - half term is just not long enough and it was really sad to say goodbye today.  She is now flying with her Daddy back to cold Wiltshire for 32 days before the next holiday.  Boarding school may be the best thing for her but it really is not for Mummy!!!

To take my mind off I have been having a go at crochet hearts from Bella Dia (great  blog by the way if you fancy a look).  What do you think of the result?  Just a bit of fun really but I have enjoyed making these two and think I might make a few more...

We took a trip over to Albrobello this week on the other coast of Italy and stayed in a Trullo.  These little houses are made of dry stone wall and are so snug and sweet.  People have lived in them for hundreds of years.  Must admit we had not expected the snow, but it made it very magical.

A Trullo in the snow.

Little L trying to catch a snow flake on her tongue!

The week ahead brings a friend from England to stay, a return to work and school and hopefully more craft time.  Have a great week all xx

New Hobbies.......

This week I have been trying my hand at card making.  My girls have also enjoyed having a go.  I am not sure we are at a professional level yet but a lot of fun was had!  When we all sit around the kitchen table and create...it does not really matter what....we have a really good chat at the same time, which is always half the fun.

A few weeks ago I tested the water for a craft club locally.  Although there were five of us on the evening, only two of us actually crafted - but again sitting on the sofa with someone I had never met - she knitting and I crocheting, the conversation flowed and I had a really enjoyable time.  Hopefully this is something to try again.

My get up and go has gone!?

Phfffffffff. Feel all flat and fed up of winter....all of my get up and go seems to have got up and gone!

To try and find some energy and enthusiasm I have brought some gorgeous flowers which are now making my sitting room smell lush............but boy I would really like this cold weather to shift and the sun come out.

Spring please come soon!!!

My next project...

I have found my next project!  In Mollie Makes (LOVE IT) I have found my next blanket.  For a while now I have been thinking I should start a blanket for my own bed as blankets are well underway for Little L and G.  Not sure it is a really good idea to start another big project but really love everything about this one...the colour, pattern...all just spot on.

However, before getting underway whilst in the wool shop I wondered if I should first use the same pattern but different colours for a picnic blanket! Below are the chosen colours for my sunshine blankie...less colours but think it will sing out.  That said having had a go the squares are tiny...so it may take me some time.

I wonder if you can have too many blankets on the go at any one time???

Bella Bella

My lovely and bestest mate came this Christmas and her very special pressie to Little L was this quilt which she lovingly made.  As little L is ill she has spent most of the week under it on the sofa - and she already loves it - as I do.  It makes me want to learn to quilt (something I have still yet to do).

In search of colour.............

So busy at the moment...this working for a living certainly gets in the way of blogging :( However, today Summer and I had a lovely hour around the orchard.  Mainly it's drab and cold at the moment so you have to look a little harder for the bright spots. That said today the sky was bright and blue, just need a touch more warmth!

The trees have been pruned and the ground ploughed - all waiting, waiting, waiting....

Summer looking very elegant.

I have no idea what these are but nice to find some colour at last!

This tree will soon be completely red with flowers - again I do not know what it is but it is very welcome in early spring.

I am not keen on the bamboo that has been planted as quick hedges in the orchard - it looks out of place but I guess it does it's job.  When the wind blows it seems to offer protection to the trees.

Oranges and Lemons again!

The oranges and lemons are literally dripping off the trees at the moment.  I don't really understand why people do not pick them?  They are mostly left to fall on the floor and rot.  Needless to say I keep picking them up and am quickly running out of things to make (perhaps that is why people leave them!)

Obviously we have pancakes quite a lot...with fresh lemon juice from a lemon literally just plucked from the tree...well... hard to beat really.

Now I have a very large bag of scrummy oranges from a neighbour which I am thinking of trying a few different things with...can you make orange curd I wonder????

Maxi-mouse...

A windy wild day today and a bank holiday here in Italy - so time to light the fire and have a little bit of fun -  thanks to http://driftwoodblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/little-mouse-tutorial.html

Now adopted by little L! Think I might have to make one for big G too!!

My bit late Christmas cake!

I must admit to making four Christmas cakes this year (quite little ones - ish).  Two of which Little L and Big G decorated for me - and we have eaten/given away both.  I would like to think that we gave away more than we ate but who am I kidding.  My last two cakes have been sitting lovingly wrapped in homemade marzipan for a few days, and today I actually got around to decorating them.  Possibly the latest ever decorated Christmas cakes!!!????

My hubby just commented that he could not see the point in decorating them now as we were only going to eat them, but you can't eat an undecorated Christmas cake can you? Besides if you decorate it you get more marzipan to eat....

A bit of a rush job...but I am sure they will taste just fine and my little girls fingers will be picking off leaves before you can say Happy New Year!

Hooky time...

Today I have been trying to make my own pattern for a tea cosy but I must admit to giving up!  Clearly my talents are not stretching that far yet.  However, the good news is I at last found a pattern I could follow on Crochet with Raymond (lots of other lovely things to make there me thinks!)

So the problem for me was the gaps for spout and handle.  This pattern gets around it by making it flat, but I would still like to make a cover in the round when my crochet skills have improved.

Anyway,  I am ridiculously pleased with my lovely little pot cover :) small things and all that!!

CREATE

My word for the year!  This is going on my windowsill to inspire (hopefully).  A hooky day today trying to make a tea cosy by crocheting in the round...I know you are very excited by that... anyway it is going well except I have not got a clue how to make the holes for the spout and handle.  I keep reading patterns but as I am still not very good at that - well lets just say it is not going too well.  I will reveal all tomorrow!!!
